China's Antarctic Great Wall Station will be connected to the Internet by the end of February – greatly reducing the distance between the Great Wall Station and China.
According to reports, after the link opens, the expedition team will be able to transmit expedition data, hold network video conferences, and make network voice calls.
Currently the "Great Wall Station - Shanghai" satellite communications project is being constructed. The Great Wall Station is in the Western Hemisphere, so it does not have direct satellite coverage in Shanghai. As a result, it employs an "International Cable plus Satellite" connection. To make this happen, China's "Snow Dragon," the polar scientific vessel, transported nearly four tons of satellite communications equipment from home to the station.
In addition, China's Antarctic Zhongshan Station will also install satellite communications projects next year.
