Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates made his final keynote speech at the Tech-Ed General Assembly held in Orlando, Florida on June 4. "This will be the first time I will change jobs in any real sense since I was 17. Prior to this, I fully indulged in software development."
On July 1, 2008, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will be expected to withdraw from his daily management of Microsoft, and commit himself to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which he co-founded with his wife.
In his speech, Gates mainly talked about interactive technology. In the past few years, interactive interface could only be realized using a mouse and keyboard. He pointed out that as a natural user interface Windows 7 is equipped with built-in touch support functions that can bring great changes to interface technology. Microsoft hopes that this technology will be a leading mainstream design in the future. He said that the interaction between people and computers has become increasingly like the interaction between people.
Last week, Microsoft announced a new-generation operating system, Windows 7 multi-point touch technology, which is part of natural HMI (Human Machine Interface). Gates said that the development of the PC in the next 10 years will place more emphasis on interpersonal relationships and Microsoft will create software platforms which can be used for various applications.
These applications not only can be used in personal computers, but also in phones, cars and televisions which are interconnected in the so-called net-cloud. Many new applications and network services will be added to these all-inclusive services such as maps, payment, friends lists, network storage, and some products yet to come.
These new applications will bring many new breakthroughs. Moreover, the new development of digital technology and significant progress in TV entertainment, reading, education and health care can also be seen through these new applications.
In addition, Gates clearly stated the competition plan for Microsoft with Google and Amazon in the services market. He said that since Microsoft has been lagging behind in hosting services, immediate action should be taken to develop new emerging web-based business.
According to Microsoft, Gates will give up all the daily management work and only preside as Microsoft chairman after July 2008.
