Indonesia's Industry Ministry and Sun Microsystem Indonesia (SMI), a leading software company, on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on open source technology use.
The two parties also inaugurated a technology center called the Center for Open Source Technology Awakening (COSTA) in an effort to push empowerment and development of Regional Information Technology Center (RICE) and Incubator Business Center (IBC).
The Technology Awakening Program is the SMI's program to support Indonesian government to socialize and increase the use of open source technology and legal software in order to strengthen local information technology (IT) industry, and at the same time to make Indonesia as the leading nation in Asia's IT industry.
The COSTA was expected to help Indonesian companies in increasing the use of open source technology through collaboration between SMI and various parties, including the government, the industry and education institutions. Besides, COSTA will be a center of learning and will result various open technology-based innovations which in turn to help the country to adopt and develop the latest various open source technology.
The inauguration was marked by MoU signing between Budi Darmadi, the ministry's director general of transportation equipment, telecommunication and information and Wibisono Gumulyo, the SMI's president director.
For the ministry, the cooperation is the materialization of developing local industry to prepare its competitive edge globally, and for the SMI, the collaboration is the form of its continuous support to increase Indonesian human resource. Source:Xinhua
