The iPhone 3GS becomes so hot that Apple is in trouble of keeping it on the shelf, showed the data of the company's retail availability Web tool.
The tool pointed that 29 of the 257 Apple stores showed shortages of one iPhone version or another last Friday. On Sunday, all but six states in U.S. were registering one model or another as entirely sold out. For example, in Texas the 16 GB white iPhone is sold out in 12 out of 15 stores.
Apple released its first iPhone model two years ago, and it quickly became a consumer phenomenon. The second-generation 3G model was released last summer. Apple has sold more than 40 million units of the iPhone and iPod Touch, which uses the same software.
