The European Union (EU) and the Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) signed an agreement to deepen their cooperation on the development of an information society, local press said on Wednesday.

During the fifth EU-LAC ministerial forum on the information society held in Spain's Segovia, representatives from both sides decided to strengthen the digital strategies to develop the regulations of the information technologies and communication sectors, improve the access and use of the Internet, enhance privacy and network security, enrich digital contents, and deepen the Internet governance.

The meeting stressed the contributions of the EU program of alliance of the information society, which was executed by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), with an aim to expand the benefits of the information society in Latin America and reduce the digital gap.

Francisco Ros, Spain's Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Information Society, said that it is necessary that the regulatory models of the sector be adapted to the information society.

The forum, held from March 14 to March 16, was organized by the EU Presidency in collaboration with the European Commission and the support of the ECLAC.
