The 2007 Beijing International Principals Summit, sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, was held in Beijing on July 13th. The summit aimed to establish a platform for cooperation and exchange between foreign countries on education in Beijing and other parts of the country; and enhance international exchange on fundamental elementary and secondary education.

More than 300 Chinese and foreign education administrators, experts and well-known principals of elementary and high schools, were invited to attend the summit with a theme of "Future, Responsibility and Development".

During the two-day summit, principals and experts on fundamental education engaged in exchanges and discussed issues such as the task of principals of future-oriented fundamental education institutions; evaluation and research of the development of future-oriented schools; and application and development of information technology for future-oriented, basic education.

Scholars who attended the summit asserted that the role of elementary and high schools principals should be utilized to their full potential, and all principals are encouraged to take on a pro-education stance. Everything on campus should reflect a school's pursuit of value. Rules and regulations should represent a schools general standards. Departments relevant to education should cultivate talents, deepen education reform, as well as implement quality education, so as to improve comprehensive national strength.

The tasks burdening elementary and high schools principals are heavier than that of university presidents, according to the attending scholars. They are urged to research students rather than merely focus on academic research. Principals should have a greater understanding among them and expand their thinking. The overall enhancement in the quality of principals will be a requirement for fundamental education in the information age.
