The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced in Beijing on Thursday that 29 prominent scientists have been elected academicians, bringing the number of CAS academicians to 710.
The new academicians, elected from 287 candidates, included six mathematicians or physicists, six chemists, seven life scientists, four geologists, one information scientists and five engineers.
Li Jinghai, CAS vice president, said 69 percent of the new academicians were under 60. The oldest was 69 and the youngest 41.
"The average age of the newly elected is 53.7, the lowest since 1991," he said.
A CAS academician title is the highest national academic achievement in science and technology and a lifelong honor. New members were added every two years, with a quota of no more than 60 for each election.
In addition, five scientists were elected foreign CAS academicians, among whom were three from the United States, and two from France and Russia, respectively. Source:Xinhua
