The international, science and policy conference Resilience 2008 has opened at Stockholm University on Monday Apr 14 with the theme of Resilience, adaptation and transformation in turbulent times.
Carl Folke, head of the steering committee for the conference, also director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University said this is the first high level science conference on the concept of resilience in combination with policy forum, speed talks and science-inspired art exhibition.
He said the aim of the Resilience Conference is to establish a corner stone of understanding of the interconnected social and ecological systems and present recommendations for policymakers in business and politics. The overarching question is: what kind of knowledge, incentives and governance systems will be required to deal with both the climate challenges and the ongoing erosion of our life-supporting ecosystems in a globally interconnected world?
Distinguished scientists, businessmen and politicians will sit together to discussing issues relating to ecology, economy and society from a Resilience perspective at the first major international Resilience Conference ever. Social conditions, health, culture, democracy and economic progress are interwoven with ecological systems in a grand panorama of worldwide dependencies. The Resilience perspective is to bring together economists, ecologists and social scientists in trans-disciplinary research as mankind is facing an uncertain change in ecological systems on earth. Canadian Professor Buzz Holling is the father of the ecological resilience theory.
"We pre-eminently need novel integrative work, specifically, novel work that integrates the economic and social with ecosystemically driven understanding," said Holling.
The conference will be concluded on Thursday.
