The Singapore National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established on Wednesday, marking the city-state's membership in the Paris-based organization after rejoining it last October.
The chairman of the commission is Ng Eng Hen, Singapore's Education Minister, not the October's announcement of Gan Kim Yong, then Minister of State for Education and Manpower, said a statement by the government.
The commission, supported by three sub-commissions focusing on education, science, and culture and information, will be responsible for planning and coordinating Singapore's activities and programs in UNESCO, said the statement.
For a start, the commission will focus on promoting greater exchanges among UNESCO member countries through a series of conferences and workshops, said the Education Ministry.
In conjunction with the launch of the commission for UNESCO, a two-day workshop for UNESCO educators and officials from the Asia and Pacific region is being held to provide a platform to facilitate exchange of ideas among educators in the region.
In mid 1980s, Singapore, following the United States and Britain, withdrew from the organization to protest against the "new world information order" that the organization promoted.
