4.399 billion yuan in academic assistance allocated

The central government recently allocated 4.399 billion yuan in scholarships and allowance for college students with financial difficulties.

Of the 4.399 billion yuan, 400 million yuan have been set aside for State scholarships, 1.161 billion in State scholarships for "motivated and determined" students; and 2.383 billion will serve as financial subsidies for the following fall semester.

Early in March, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education jointly allocated 2.214 billion yuan in State subsidiary scholarships for colleges during the spring semester; and 4.38 billion yuan for vocational schools. So far, the central budget has allocated a total of 11.493 billion yuan in scholarships and allowance in 2008.
