California State University, the largest public higher education system in the United States, said Monday that it will eliminate a total of 10,000 admission spots in its 23 campus across the state for the 2009-2010 school year.
Charles Reed, chancellor of the university system, told a press conference that the "systemwide impaction" will affect most campuses in the system, although several over-enrolled schools are already affected by the impaction.
A bleak budget means that CSU campuses are no longer able to accept everyone into next fall's freshman class, the chancellor said.
According to Reed, each campus in the system will be assigned an enrollment quota, which will equal student enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year. Depending on their individual enrollment demand, campuses will close down applications for admissions as early as November 30 or as late as March 1, 2009.
Total enrollment in the CSU system is currently about 460,000 students. The reduction in enrollment spots will lower that figure to about 450,000 students.
