New research in Australia showed on Wednesday more than 6,000 jobs will be lost if overseas student enrollments drop by 5 percent amid the global financial crisis.
International student's total contribution of 26.7 billion Australian dollars (18.4 billion U.S. dollars) to the Australian economy includes money spent by visiting family and friends, the Access Economics report has suggested.
The export education market has created 126,240 local jobs, the report was quoted by Australian Associated Press as said.
But 6,312 of those jobs would vanish if the sector suffered a 5 percent drop in overseas enrollments as a result of the deepening global recession, the report has estimated.
The Rudd government has been worried about a potential decline in numbers, having announced last month it would spend 3.5 million Australian dollars (2.4 million U.S. dollars) trying to attract international students to Australia next year.
The Study in Australia 2010 campaign will target students in countries including China, India, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand during the next eight months.
