Gustaf Landahl, who is in charge of clean vehicles in Stockholm has said that 40% of all cars being sold in the capital city are clean.
In an interview with People's Daily Online recently, he said that Stockholm has actively worked for a market introduction of clean vehicles since 1994. The main method the city introduced is through government procurement to create a market.
"We go to the car companies and tell them what kind of cars we like to have and asked them to design the car and we construct the infrastructure. By doing so, we created a market at the beginning and then lead the consumers to buy clean cars through a series of stimulant policies," said Mr. Landahl.
Mr. Landahl said that clean vehicles mainly refer to those use battery, ethanol or biogas or hybrid. People who buy those cars will get certain subsidies and free parking place. Now the subsidies come to an end, but the momentum to buy clean car is underway.
Statistics also show that all inner city buses operate on biogas or ethanol, half of the waste-lorries and 40% of the taxis are biofuelled or hybrids. More than 65 fuel stations accounting for 75% of the total offer ethanol or biogas and all petrol sold in the region contains 5% ethanol. In Stockholm, the green house gas emission per inhabitant is 50% lower than the national average. And emissions per person have been reduced by 25% since 1995.
Stockholm will become the European Green Capital 2010.
