Palestinian lawmakers with President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement would boycott the sessions of Hamas-dominated Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), a Fatah legislator said on Tuesday. Najat Abu Bakker, a member of parliament from Fatah movement, told reporters that Fatah lawmakers would boycott any future session of the PLC. "Fatah members of parliament would never sit down together with other members who led a coup on the Palestinian legal leadership," said Abu Bakker, referring to parliament members of Hamas, which seized the Gaza Strip last month. In response, Yahia Musa, deputy speaker of Hamas majority in the PLC, held Fatah movement responsible for disfunctioning the parliament by boycotting its sessions. In January of 2006, Hamas movement overwhelmingly defeated its rival Fatah in the Palestinian legislative elections. Among the total 132 seats in the PLC, Hamas gained 76 seats, while Fatah had 43. Since last year, Israel has detained at least 39 Palestinian lawmakers, most of whom were Hamas members. As a result, the PLC currently has less than 50 Hamas members, which doesn't allow Hamas to convene and pass bills because the attending members represented less than 50 percent of the PLC seats.
