The U.S. defense attache in Cyprus, whose body was found Monday, died from cuts to his throat, local media reported Tuesday. A postmortem examination showed Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Mooney's death was caused by "excessive bleeding caused by deep incisions to the throat," the semi-official Cyprus News Agency quoted police as saying. Some media went further by claiming Mooney took his own life. The forensic pathologist, who carried out the postmortem, was quoted as saying that there was "no evidence of foul play," which suggests that the American diplomat may have committed suicide. The U.S. embassy has not responded to the suicide report.
U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Thomas Schlicher confirmed Monday the death of Mooney, who had gone missing since June 28. Mooney's body was found by local police in a mountainous area west of the capital city Nicosia, along with his Chevrolet Impala car. The U.S. diplomat was on his second tour of duty to Cyprus in five years.
