Over 50 Nepalis die in monsoon-caused gastro outbreak |

More than 50 Nepalis have died inmonsoon-caused gastroenteritis outbreaks, local newspaper The Rising Nepal reported Wednesday.
More than 50 people have died of gastroenteritis out of 3,574 cases in five districts, according to the Epidemiology and DiseaseControl Unit (EDCU) under the Ministry of Health and Population.
Director Manas Kumar Benarjee at the EDCU said the reason for the outbreak was bacterial contamination of drinking water.
Among the 3,574 cases of acute gastroenteritis registered at the EDCU, 38 cases were of cholera and two other suspected cases. The disease has claimed the lives of 52 patients so far.
There are some scattered cases of death not registered at the EDCU yet, said the doctor.
In 2002, 16 districts were affected and 31 died out of 2,723 cases due to gastroenteritis, 35 died out of 6,674 cases in 2003, 408 died out of 19,811 cases in 2004 and 37 died out of 2,137 cases in 2005.
