Vietnam to import more bird flu vaccines for fowls from China

Vietnam will import additional 200 million doses of bird flu vaccines for poultry from China.

The Vietnamese Finance Ministry has agreed to import the vaccines which will be bottled in Vietnam, local newspaper VietnamAgriculture reported Wednesday.

Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has urged relevant agencies to accelerate the process of testing locally-made bird flu vaccines. Now, Vietnam mainly uses vaccines imported mainly from China and the Netherlands.

The country has so far this year vaccinated 153.5 million fowlsin 63 out of its 64 cities and provinces, including nearly 85.6 million chickens, over 64.3 million ducks and roughly 3.6 million white-winged ducks, according to the Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Bird flu, starting to strike Vietnam in December 2003, has hit 18 cities and provinces nationwide since early May, the departmentsaid, noting that nine localities have detected no new outbreaks for at least three weeks, meeting criteria for announcing an end to bird flu outbreaks in their territory.
