The Mong Kok Bird Garden will reopen on July 5 and a set of licensing conditions for pet bird traders will be launched in the meantime, announced the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong government on Wednesday.
Located in Yuen Po Street in Mong Kok, the Bird Garden was closed on June 17 after H5N1 avian flu virus was detected in a fecal sample collected from a Durian Starling that had been kept in a pet bird shop there.
It will reopen following an 18-day-long testing and observationperiod.
All 330 swab samples, including fecal samples from shops and environmental samples, collected from the Bird Garden since June 17, were H5N1 negative after a series of laboratory tests.
In announcing the reopening, the department's Assistant Director Dr. Thomas Sit said the department was satisfied with thebirds' health conditions and the sanitation of the Bird Garden, including the public area and the pet bird shops, where thorough cleansing had been conducted.
The new set of licensing conditions will help regulate pet birdtrading, both inside and outside the Bird Garden, ensuring that all birds kept in the licensed premises were from approved sources.
The department officers will continue to monitor the Bird Garden closely and ensure that the new licensing conditions are strictly followed, Dr. Sit said.
