Thousands of Cambodian students on Wednesday marched in Phnom Penh to raise the awareness of dengue fever.

This march is the beginning of the campaign of anti-dengue fever in Cambodia, which aims to raise the awareness of this disease among common people and teach them how to prevent it, a press release said, adding that people should clean the places around their houses and do not allow mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

The march was organized by the anti-dengue fever authority of Cambodian Ministry of Health in cooperation with insecticide companies.

Although this year's rainy season just began, 84 have died due to the mosquito-borne disease, more than half of last year's totalnumber of 156, Ngan Chantha, deputy director of the National Malaria Center of the Health Ministry, said last month.

Dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, mostly hits tropical and sub-tropical regions. The symptoms include high fever, nausea, rashes, backache and headaches.

The hemorrhagic variant, which causes severe internal bleeding as blood vessels collapse, is often fatal.
