A 68-year-old man has died of legionnaires' disease and 14 people have been infected in the southern Spanish city of Benalmadena, health officials said on Monday. The infected were receiving treatment at local hospitals and they were in a stable condition, local media reported, quoting local health officials. No new cases had been reported in the past 48 hours, the officials said. The bacteria causing the outbreak was believed to be spread from a contaminated cooling tower of a local ice skating rink. The tower and the rink were closed, and the government has also suspended the operation of some artificial fountains and water spraying on public green spaces.
Legionnaires' disease causes headaches, fevers, chills, muscle aches and pains, leading to respiratory problems and pneumonia. About 10 percent of the infected die. It is spread by a waterborne bacteria which usually develops in air conditioning systems and dirty showers.
