Passengers on the same flight as a U.S. tuberculosis patient who sparked an international health scare launched nine civil lawsuits Thursday in Montreal.

Andrew Speaker, an American lawyer, boarded the plane from Prague to Montreal in May with what was then believed to be a deadly form of tuberculosis, known as XDR TB.

The suit, worthing a total of 1.3 million U.S. dollars, was launched by seven Canadian passengers and two Czech women who were on the Czech Airlines flight with Speaker, their lawyer Anlac Nguyen said.

He said that his clients had been forced to put their lives on hold and had endured financial loss, anxiety and depression.

"His behavior was reckless," passenger Nassim Tabri who is suing Speaker for 133,740 U.S. dollars said, "I want him to be held accountable for what he has done."

In a June interview with ABC television, Speaker said: "I hope they understand, based on what I was told I didn't think I was making that gamble."

Nguyen said nine separate civil suits were filed against Speaker, noting there could be more suits filed in the next few weeks.
