Some 46.6 percent of Romanians aged over 18 smoke at least a cigarette a day, local media reported on Thursday, quoting a recent market research study. The study found that 59.2 percent of Romanian men smoke at least one cigarette a day, and the number for women is 34.5 percent, the national news agency Rimpres reported.
Women are "lighter" smokers - with a maximum of 15 cigarettes a day, while most men smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day, the report said. The study, conducted by ISRA Center Marketing Research during April-June on 3,326 Romanians aged over 18, is designed to highlight the Romanians' smoking frequency and habits. According to latest statistics, smoking kills 33,000 people a year in Romania, with more than 70 percent of them aged between 35 and 69. And one out of four people who die in their middle age suffer from diseases associated with smoking. Smokers in Romania account for 30 percent of the country's active population.
