“Nanking” beaten by“Transformers”?

According to the report, soon after “Nanking” was played for a week in Shanghai, the film, “Transformers,” beat “Nanking,” and rushed to the top of box office charts. The People’s Daily newspaper called this phenomenon “Chasing entertainment, discarding history,” on July 16th. What do you think of this phenomenon?

Ted: I am flattered that you mention "Nanking" in the same breath as "Transformers". "Transformers" is a major studio motion picture and "Nanking" is a small independent film financed by me personally. I believe our Chinese partners will distribute and promote "Nanking" for the remainder of this year and my expectation is that the Chinese viewing public will embrace the film and make it one of the most watched documentaries in China''s history. I have faith in the Chinese people and their desire to see this film.

Violet: As we know that the promotion plans of “Nanking” and “Transformers” for the Chinese film distributors are different. For “Nanking”, the plan is a long-term plan, and it is set to be brought onto the theaters on a large scale next August and September. And it is blameless for the cinemas and theaters to take profit into consideration. We believe they have their reason to make such plan as they have years’ of distribution experience. We have a same goal, which is to wish every Chinese has a chance to see this film.

Is there any plan or arrangement to promote this documentary film throughout the world? What will you do to increase booking rates and rise at the box offices?

Ted: We are very fortunate to have arranged for distribution deals throughout the world. ThinkFilm will distribute "Nanking" throughout the US starting in December. Major Cable outlets are in negotiations with us as well. Outside of the US, Fortissimo acquired the rights for "Nanking” and is selling it throughout Europe and Asia. In China, CCTV will broadcast "Nanking" to their base of customers. The film was released in July to theaters in China.
