A laboratory test confirmed on Wednesday that bird flu had killed more than 100 chickens earlier this month in Indian northeastern state of Manipur, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) quoted the local officials as saying.

"A general alert has been sounded across the state after the Indian health and animal husbandry departments confirmed that tests carried out on chickens that died at a small poultry farm here have tested positive for bird flu," Bimal Singh, an official at the Manipur chief minister's office, told the IANS.

Some 130 chickens died earlier this month at a poultry farm near Imphal, capital of Manipur, prompting authorities to send samples to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal, a city in the middle of India, for tests.

According to the government, it is a small outbreak and culling will be done over a 5 km radius of the affected area.

Meanwhile, the local health officials said there were no immediate reports of humans contracting the virus.
