A 22-year-old woman from Vietnam's northern Ha Tay province was diagnosed to have contracted bird flu virus strain H5N1, local newspaper Saigon Liberation reported Tuesday.
The farmer from the province's Thanh Oai district, who has respiratory illness and needs respiratory assistance, is being treated in Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, the newspaper quoted sources from the Vietnamese Health Ministry as saying.
Vietnam reported five human bird flu cases from mid-May to early July, of whom two died and three others fully recovered, according to the ministry. The last bird flu patient among them was discharged from hospital on July 4.
Now, three provinces in Vietnam, namely Dien Bien in the northern region, Quang Binh in the central and Dong Thap in the southern, are being hit by bird flu.
Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.
