The Jiangsu company had reached an accord with Hollywood''s Viridian Entertainment, but was forced to change partners earlier this year when Viridian failed to put its planned investment of at least 20 million U.S. dollars in place.
The producers have not revealed the cast, a question that has intrigued the public since plans for the new movie were announced last summer.
Shooting started on Tuesday morning at Nanjing''s Pukou Railway Station and is scheduled to be completed this year. The film would be released worldwide, its producers said.
Dr. Li said the film would "help those who suffered in the holocaust find the comfort they deserve", and to depict the kindness and brutality of the human race.
"The Chinese people and our international friends went beyond the confines of race, nationality and faith to prove the dignity of human life in the face of this atrocity," he told Xinhua in an exclusive interview. "One has to remember history to cherish the hard-won peace."
The new film would also help people in the West understand the Nanjing Massacre type of human tragedy and its survivors, said director Simon West. "We''re liable to remember what happened and draw lessons from history."
