Government-sponsored programs for the prevention of the HIV/AIDS disease will continue in 2008, Romanian Public Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu said Wednesday.
At the opening ceremony of Romania's HIV/AIDS Center, Nicolaescu said the institution is a "forward step" in fighting against the disease.
The aim of Romania's national strategy for HIV/AIDS prevention and combat in 2008-2013 is to maintain the downward trends in the spread of this disease, he added.
"There are over 10,000 AIDS sufferers and some 6,000 HIV-virus bearers currently recorded in Romania," Nicoalescu said.
"Romania is a country where the disease is at one of its lowest levels, with the number of new registered cases having fallen in 2006 from (the number in) 2002 and there are indications the descending trend will continue in 2007," he said.
Nicoalescu said Romania is among very few European countries which offer free treatment to those infected with HIV.
