Bhandari said the hospital has a capacity of 350 patients at a time, and now they have opened two makeshift camps on the campus with 350 additional beds to receive more patients, as diarrhea broke out in an epidemic form in the flood-hit areas.
Over 43,000 people have been attacked by diarrhea and 11 died across the country due to lack of clean water caused by the flood, which affected 38 of the country''s 64 districts, leaving 268 killed and millions marooned.
Bhandari said if situation demands, his hospital will set up one more makeshift camp.
"Our priority is now to save life. We are doing our best to save all the patients admitted here," Bhandari said.
"To tackle the situation, we have recruited over 100 doctors and paramedics," he said.
Bhandari also did not rule out a few patients of cholera among such a big number of diarrhea cases. "But now we have no time to analyze that," he said.
Besides the ICDDRB, most of the hospitals in Dhaka are also overcrowded, struggling hard to cope with the exigencies. Diarrhea units have been opened at all government hospitals to treat the patients expeditiously.
However, Dr. Nurul Islam of the control room of Health Directorate under the Health Ministry told Xinhua that around 1, 000 people, mainly children die of diarrhea out of 2.2 million affected by the bacteria across the country annually.
