A man has died of West Nile virus in Los Angeles, bringing the death toll to six in California, health officials said on Friday.
Meanwhile, two more human cases of West Nile virus were confirmed in the Los Angeles area on Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).
The man, who was in his 80s, had multiple chronic health problems resulting from infection by West Nile virus and died following a brief hospitalization, said LACDPH.
Four human cases of the virus have been confirmed in Los Angeles County this year. Across California, about 80 cases have been reported.
The virus is spread to humans from a bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes can become infected by biting a bird that carries the virus. The virus cannot be spread by person-to-person contact or directly from birds to humans, health officials said.
People can decrease their risk of infection by avoiding mosquito- infested areas at dawn and dusk, wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants when outdoors, using repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemoneucalyptus, cleaning and chlorinating swimming pools, and emptying and washing birdbaths and wading pools weekly.
