Bird flu outbreaks have recently been spotted in Vietnam's southern Dong Thap province and northern Thai Nguyen province, according to the country's Department of Animal Health on Saturday.
Half of a flock of 500 chicks raised by a household in Dong Thap's Lap Vo district have died since Aug. 19. On Aug. 22, 150 ducks and 35 chickens raised by a household in Thai Nguyen's Pho Yen district were sick. The specimens from the affected poultry have been tested positive to bird flu virus strain H5N1.
Bird flu now is hitting four communes in the three northern provinces of Dien Bien, Cao Bang and Thai Nguyen, and Dong Thap, said the department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.
