Czech doctors have applied for the first time in the world the American-developed method of treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea that is based on the implantation of a magnet in the tongue, the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes (MFD) reported on Thursday.
The paper said that the Czech doctor Vaclav Pavelec premiered the method in Domazlice, west Bohemia area, in April.
The method consists in the mutual attraction of the magnet fixed to the tongue and another outer magnet that prevents the tongue from getting stuck and blocking the respiratory air passages, the paper said.
The Americans worked on the method development for about 1.5 years. They found out Pavelec on the basis of published specialist studies and agreed with him on the first operation.
Pavelec will also carry out a study of the method that will include 15 patients in the Czech Republic.
Other operations will be done in Germany and the Netherlands, according to Nat Bowditch, director of Apneon firm that developed the method.
If the study results are good, the method will be massively applied in sleep apnoea treatment, the paper said.
