The death toll due to consumption of spurious liquor has reached 22 in Janakpur in central Nepal by Sunday afternoon, local media reported.
According to a leading website, nepalnews.com, a total of nine villagers died Sunday after drinking spurious liquor on the outskirts of Janakpur Municipality.
According to earlier reports, four people had died Saturday night while five more deaths were reported Sunday. Dozens of people had fallen sick after consuming contaminated alcohol made in a local distillery.
As many as nine deaths were reported on Thursday and Friday.
Laboratory test has shown urea contamination in the alcohol, police said.
According to the website, the condition of other five persons undergoing treatment at Janakpur Zonal Hospital, some 120 km south- east of Kathmandu, is serious, the medical staffs of the hospital said. They also stated that most of the critical patients have respiratory problems.
According to reports, police have arrested around half a dozen owners of small drinking dens, but still many large producers of the hooch are at large.
