Vietnam needs more nurses to take care of the health of people by 2010 as the increasing population is placing huge pressure on its healthcare system, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Wednesday.
The country will need some 187,000 nurses by 2010, reaching a rate of three nurses per doctor, compared to over 61,000 nurses and the rate of 1.57 per doctor at present, while many other countries have an average rate of 4-8 nurses per doctor, the newspaper said.
With annually increasing 1.6 million people, Vietnam's population is expected to reach 89 million by 2010, which leads to the situation that there will be a shortage of nursing staff. Other reasons for the shortage of nurses include limited training capacity and lack of funds for adequate training facilities, said the paper.
There are about 60 training centers including universities, colleges and schools nationwide. On average, each school will have to train more than 400 students per year, but each school now only has the capacity to train 100-200 students per year, according to the paper.
