A 51-year-old Brazilian woman serving as the surrogate mother for her daughter is scheduled to give birth to her twin grandsons next month, Local media reported on Thursday.
Rosinete Serrao, who lives in Recife, capital city of Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil, is expected to give birth on Oct. 12, said physician Claudio Leal Ribeiro, who is a specialist in human reproduction.
Four embryos, fertilized by her 27-year-old daughter Claudia Michelle and son-in-law Antonio de Brito, were implanted in her uterus in January. Two have reached the 37th week of pregnancy.
The two boys, who are to be named Antonio Bento and Vitor Gabriel, will make Michelle's dream come true following four years of failed pregnancy after hormone treatment.
When the physician suggested surrogacy as an option, the daughter appealed to her mother, as Brazil only allows her close relatives to serve as surrogate mothers. Michelle does not have a female sibling.
Although Serrao faces risks because of her age, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, the pregnancy has been going well, despite a small hemorrhage at the beginning.
Serrao is even considering giving up psychologic therapy after giving birth, which was recommended in cases like hers.
"Since the beginning, it has been very clear to me that these babies are my grandchildren, and not my children," the grandmother-to-be said.
It will be the first case of a grandmother giving birth to twin grandchildren in the world, Ribeiro said.
Ribeiro, who has worked with vitro fertilization since 1990, said that only one child was produced in each cases where a grandmother is registered as serving as a surrogate mother to a grandchild.
