Vietnam has detected more people dying from non-infectious diseases since 2002, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Friday.

The fatality rate among people contracting non-infectious diseases, such as heart problems, cancer, diabetes, and mental disorder, has stood at 60 percent, according to a report issued at a recent meeting to review the country's 2002-2006 program on combating non-infectious diseases.

Between 2002 and 2005, some 150,000 cancer sufferers, including 75,000 deaths, were detected in the country each year.

Vietnam with a population of over 84 million has intensified its healthcare network to fight against non-infectious diseases, and improved public awareness about them.
