Floods and landslides sparked by torrential rain in Vietnam's northern and central regions killed or left missing 48 local people since Oct. 4, local media reported Saturday.

Central Nghe An province reported eight deaths and 14 missing; northern Thanh Hoa province, six deaths; and northern Yen Bai province, one death and one missing, said Vietnam's Central Television.

Meanwhile, northern Son La province found 10 deaths and missing, and the northern provinces of Hoa Binh and Ninh Binh respectively reported seven and one death, said Vietnam News Agency.

The disasters also damaged tens of thousands of houses, submerged hundreds of thousands of hectares of subsidiary crops, and disrupted electricity and telecommunications system in some areas.

The country has mobilized soldiers and more equipment to help evacuate flood victims and provide them food and medicines.

Natural disasters, including typhoons and hails in Vietnam killed 339 people, left 274 persons missing, and injured 2,065 others in 2006. The estimated losses totaled 18.6 trillion Vietnamese dong (nearly 1.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the year.
