The Vietnamese government has asked localities to make greater efforts to combat Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), known as blue ear disease, among pigs.

The government has urged localities and relevant agencies to disseminate public information about PRRS more strongly, and implement stricter measures to control the disease, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Wednesday.

Local officials have to take responsibilities for the disease' occurrence in their localities, and publicize any cases of its outbreak. Other measures include strict inspection of the transport and slaughtering of non-quarantined animals, and disinfection of affected areas to curb the disease's transmission.

Measures to contain the disease need to be stepped up in five northern and central provinces which have recently been stricken by storms and floods.

PRRS is now hitting northern Hai Duong province, central Khanh Hoa province and southern Ca Mau province, according to the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

PRRS was first recognized in the United States in the mid-1980sand is now present in most pig producing countries. The symptoms include reproductive failure, pneumonia and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.
