The population in Beijing might top 20 million by 2020, according to research into China's population and human resources growth and distribution by the Institute of Population Research, Peking University.
According to the Institute's report, in the past five decades, the demographic aggregate of Beijing increased by more than 10 million. This was mainly due to the influx of people and those who have made permanent residence in the city; while growth in the local population did not exist for five successive years, and contributed little to the metropolitan population explosion.
In the next two decades, the proportion of the elderly will soar by 12 percentage points; while that of teenagers and children will remain between 11-13 percent, according to the report. As the population ages more quickly, without the migrant population the workforce will decline by ten percentage points.
