Although as many as 470,000people suffer from cancer in Brazil, there are still around 30 percent of people remain largely ignorant of the deadly disease, a cancer research center said Thursday.

In a survey conducted by Brazil's National Cancer Institute, only 14.6 percent of the interviewees said they had been fully informed of cancer, whereas 59 percent still associate it with punishment, despair, pain and death.

However, the study did find as many as 90 percent of the respondents knew the importance of early diagnoses.

Luiz Antonio Santini, the cancer institute director, attributed the result to successful campaigns designed to raise the people's cancer awareness.

He said his institute would analyze the results of study to guide similar work in the future.

The study also showed 45 percent of Brazilians had learned about cancer from advertisements and news on TV.

Brazil now has a population of 183.9 million.
