An estimated 50 militants have been killed in northwestern Pakistan's tribal area during the army action over the last two days, local newspaper The News quoted army spokesman Waheed Arshad as saying on Sunday.
Arshad said that security forces targeted militants' hideouts in South Waziristan with artillery guns and other weapons and an operation against militants led by Baitullah Mehsud, a prominent militant leader.
The government launched a massive crackdown on the Mehsud tribes people in South Waziristan on Saturday and arrested dozens of people and seized their vehicles, according to The News.
Baitullah Mehsud was accused of involvement in the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on Dec. 27, an allegation denied by Mehsud.
