Bird flu has recently stricken poultry in central Quang Nam province, lifting the total number of affected localities across Vietnam to 11, local newspaper Pioneer reported Monday.

The disease killed some in the flock of 300 ducks raised by a household in Thang Binh district from March 10-12. Their specimens have been tested positive to bird flu virus strain H5N1, the paperquoted the provincial Veterinary Bureau as reporting.

Vietnam currently has 11 localities having poultry being hit bybird flu: Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, Tuyen Quang, Hanoi and Lao Cai in the northern region, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Quang Nam inthe central region, and Soc Trang and Vinh Long in the south.

Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.
