The dengue fever epidemic in Brazil has begun to show signs of decline since April, after killing 106 people in the state of Rio this year, State Secretary of Health Sergio Cortes said Thursday.
According to official figures, 131,238 cases of dengue infection were registered in Rio state since January, of which 56 percent (73,493 cases) were detected in the city of Rio.
The number of infected people surged from 17,507 in January to over 65,000 in March, before falling to just under 25,000 in April. Reported cases in the first week of May numbered 146.
However, Cortes said that the figures released Thursday were subject to change, as further cases can only be confirmed by tests held on later dates. Therefore, only the cases registered more than four weeks ago could be regarded as consolidated.
Due to the change in the epidemic scenario, emergency units such as field hospitals, built to provide hydration services to patients, will be redistributed according to the decreasing demand for medical care, the health secretary added. Source: Xinhua
