Dengue kills 100 with fast growing cases in Philippines this year

Dengue disease has killed more than 100 people so far this year in the Philippines and the cases have increased by more than a third compared with the same period last year, reported local television network GMA News on Saturday.

The report quoted the Department of Health officials as saying that dengue cases increased by 33.9 percent from Jan. 1 to April 5with at least 9,176 cases admitted in various hospitals nationwide.

At least 108 people have died of dengue so far this year, said the report.

Metro Manila accounted for 26 percent of the total cases with 2,382 cases reported, including 17 deaths, according to the report.

Other areas which have disclosed higher number of victims hit by the mosquito-carried virus are Central Visayas, Central Luzon, Calabarzon area south of Manila and Zamboanga Peninsula in the southern Mindanao region.
