A new record was set at auction Wednesday when Francis Bacon's three-panel masterpiece "Triptych, 1976" sold for 86 million U.S. dollars at Sotheby's in New York.

The previous record for the Irish-born artist's work was set last year at 52.7 mln dollars, for his "Study for Innocent X, 1952."
The buyers were anonymous, and the prices included the auction house's commission, known as a buyer's premium.
"The world has been waiting for a great Bacon triptych, and this is it," Tobias Meyer, Sotheby's worldwide head of contemporary art, said in a statement advertising the sale last month.
Bacon, who died in 1992 at 82, is considered one of Britain's most important 20th century artists.
