The government will pay for the tuition for the college or professional education of orphans who lost their parents in the strong earthquake that hit Sichuan province on May 12. Regulations for the adoption of the orphans are being drafted.

At a press conference held by the Sichuan government on May 19, Vice Governor Li Chengyun told reporters that there would be overall planning for the reconstruction of schools, taking the local demographic situation into consideration. Provincial educational authorities will answer the inquiries of donors who intend to build schools.

Li also declared that the government would pay for the higher education of the orphans. Those who are not enrolled in college will be offered access to vocational schools, and later jobs upon graduation. The professional school education will also be free.

The government will make proper arrangement for junior secondary school students, according to their age. And this will also be free of charge.

At the press conference on May 20, the Civil Affairs Ministry said that each orphan who lost their parents in the disaster would have a 600-yuan living allowance per month for three months; and they would be taken care of by welfare organizations. They will also receive psychological assistance and efforts are being made to look for their relatives.

Adoption of these orphans are encouraged. The regulations for adoption are yet to be formulated.
