French philologist, semiologist and historian Tzvetan Todorov Wednesday won the Spanish Prince of Asturias Prize for Social Sciences 2008.
The Prince of Asturias Foundation said Todorov won the prize for his works on such issues as development of democracy, understanding among cultures and the impact of violence on collective memory.
Todorov represents "the spirit of the unity of East and West Europe, as well as the ideals of freedom, equality, integration and justice," the foundation said.
Todorov was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1939. His works covering literature, philosophy, history and semiology have been translated into 25 languages.
Todorov will be awarded with 50,000 euros in cash.
The social sciences prize is one of the eight that the Prince of Asturias Foundation hands out every year. Others include literature, communication, sports and scientific research.
The prize, which was established in 1981, is named after the Spanish Crown Prince Asturias (Felipe).
