About 20,000 people in Turkey die due to medical malpractice every year, local daily Today's Zaman reported on Thursday.
Professor Metin Cakmakci, director of the Anatolian Health Center (ASM) Medical Services, said "some 6,000-10,000 people die in traffic accidents annually. Unfortunately, the number of deaths caused by medical error is two times more than that of traffic accidents."
This figure could increase to 50,000, he was quoted as saying, adding that the most common error patients encounter is incorrect prescription.
"The health system is in a bad state worldwide. This is also the case in Turkey. The way the system is designed leads to medical staff committing mistakes. This situation must be scrutinized," Cakmakci said, suggesting that health services should be improved.
The ASM was established through a partnership between Anadolu Vakfi (Anatolia Foundation) and Johns Hopkins Medicine in 2005.
