The U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a bill worth 48 billion U.S. dollars to prevent the spread of AIDS and other diseases worldwide over next five years.
The legislation, passed in a 80-16 vote, would more than triple the funding of a current 15-billion-dollar U.S. anti-AIDS plan which has already benefited some 1.7 million people around the world.
The measure was backed by President George W. Bush and presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain.
The House of Representatives appears ready to approve the Senate version of the bill. Source: Xinhua
