The number of anonymous HIV testings taken by Singaporeans is 2.5 times as many as that a year ago, said a survey in a local media report on Thursday.
The survey, conducted by pharmaceutical firm Rockeby biomed, showed that 1,723 Singaporeans went for anonymous HIV testing in June this year, 2.5 times the number of last July's 678, local TV Channel NewsAsia reported.
Seventy-five percent testers were first-timers, compared to about 67 percent last year.
It also found that more singles and women are also getting tested, said the report.
Channel NewsAsia quoted the firm which conducted the survey as saying one reason for the increase is the awareness that treatment of HIV/AIDS is possible, if detected early.
Recent changes in legislation in Singapore may also contributed to the change in attitudes, said the report.
Under the amended Infectious Diseases Act, a high-risk individual may be prosecuted if found engaging in sexual activity without first informing the partner of his or her HIV status.
Singapore reported 422 new cases of HIV infection in 2007, bringing the total number to 3,482.
