Joining Steve and Charlie in the category are 'Monk' actor Tony Shalhoub, Lee Pace from 'Pushing Daisies' and '30 Rock' star Alec Baldwin. In the female equivalent, Christina Applegate and America Ferrera are the frontrunners for their roles in 'Samantha Who?' and 'Ugly Betty' respectively.

They will compete against Julia Louis-Dreyfus from 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' , Tina Fey of '30 Rock' fame and 'Weeds' star Mary Louise-Parker at the event to be held at the Nokia Theatre.

Other notable competitors include Glenn Close and Sally Field in the Lead Actress in a Drama category and Hugh Laurie and James Spader who are up for the Lead Actor in a Drama award.

This is the first year US reality TV hosts will be recognised. 'Project Runway' host Heidi Klum will battle it out with 'American Idol' presenter Ryan Seacrest, among others. US TV mini-series 'John Adams' earned the most nominations with an incredible 23 nods from the voting board, while '30 Rock' led the comedy categories with 17 nominations.

The Emmy Awards have already caused controversy, with 'Grey's Anatomy' star Katherine Heigl removing herself from contention after blaming the medical drama's writers for not giving her good enough material.

Following Katherine's decision, Lindsay Lohan also withdrew from the competition, saying her guest role in 'Ugly Betty' was not important enough to warrant a nomination.
